Certainly in Europe. In the Asian region I believe some chemical etching
systems are still in use as well as laser, but the bigger releases have
overlay-printed subtitles.
On the subject of screen luminance, the SMPTE standard for 35mm film quotes
16ftL, while the DCI (doigital projection) standard in 14ftL. This isn't a
discrepancy: the 35mm standard is "open gate". Once you put clear film in
there you'll lose a bit of brightness, down to about 14ftL.
Whether the titles that Rob saw were chemical, laser or overlay printed,
they couldn't be brighter than the level for clear film. If they were OK and
the image was dark, it would have to be a problem with the print, not a
screen luminance thing. Of course if they were digitally projected (DTS do
a system as Dick pointed out, so does Dolby, then it's a different story,
though I'd be surprised if a cinema that ran such an under-lit image
projector would lash out with an over-the-top data projector.
