IMHO the broadcast industry in the US is doing an absolute crap job of
educating the public about over the air digital television. Most people don't know
that it exists, or that there are mulitcast channels, or that NTSC is being
turned off in 2009 (NTSC-only sets are still being sold!). I bet I'm one of the
very few people on the west side of Los Angeles whose household is free OTA HD
only, into three fixed sets, two LG 3410 HD pvr's and a laptop USB tuner-based
pvr, only one of which is an actual HD screen. Is the NAB completely in
thrall to the cablers?
Without paying any subscription fees at all, we get, I think, 63 channels of
free streaming HD, including multicast. We do pay Verizon for DSL, but YouTube
is good for getting those indispensible snippets of cable, Stewart and
Colbert particularly :-)
