The purchase shouldn't be a big surprise.

Like Google itself, It's an advertising medium.  If it attracts 
eyeballs, it'll attract ads for those eyeballs.

Ads=Income.

The Google search engine (and YouTube) are just ways of gathering 
enough eyeballs long enough to see or to click on a link... much like 
the remote control for your television is an access point to another 
major ad supported medium... on some channels.
