Wikipedia tells us that:
"Stochastic resonance was discovered and proposed for the first time in 1981
to explain the periodic recurrence of ice ages."
That's the best segue you'll get between energy saving tumble dryers (and
therefore global warming) and Peter's comments on the stochastic nature of
grain. . . .
Grain, providing a different sample structure in every frame of a filmed
image, adds to the amount of detail we can see in a subject. A regular pixel
structure, even if it offers the same number of data points in a single
frame, does not offer any opportunities for getting more information over a
tem[poral sequence.
If that means that we can see more fine detail in a grain-sructured image,
it also means that there is more data in it, and so a compression engine has
to do more work to process that information.
I think that's what Peter said (but I failed thermodynamics in my physics
course as a result of skipping all the lectures to organise student
elections, and it took me years to realise that I'd learnt all about random
noise having an undue effect on results, years before that stochastic stuff
was even thought of).
