There are a number of special techniques used in high speed
photography.

Eight years ago I was working on a physics experiment at Los Alamos
and used a Hadland electronic camera. It only took 8 frames but
they could be *very* fast. In fact, it took an "end run" around
the problem: it was really 8 cameras. A super prism block after
the prime lens divided the image 8 ways to 8 individual sensors.
Each sensor contained a microchannel plate image intensifier
(adjustable gain, makes up for the low light!) and a CCD array.
The MCP intensifiers were electronically gated so their exposure
instants and durations could be set down to the nanosecond range.

The Hadland was well-established technology at the time; I can't
say what a brand-new 21st-century 2-million fps camera might be
doing.

Cheers,
  Chuck
