Is this a particular use of the term "thick" - implying a greater physical
dimension or something?

I've always understood an underexposed neg to be called "thin" as in "so
thin you could shoot peas through it".

A thick negative is what DP's produce by overexposing a stop or so to ward
off graininess.

They both have the same physical thickness.

In that context it is self-evident that dirt will show up more on an
underexposed negative,as the dirt is just as dark but more of it will be on
a light area of the negative.

Or am I being thick and missing something?
